Golden State of Mind

A Designer creates the perfect haven for a growing family on the go.
— By Chelsie Butler

When a busy California couple needed a major update to their residence, they hired designer Wendy Glaister Interiors, after they saw her work on Houzz. The clients are busy physicians who work long hours and were expecting their first child. They wanted to make this forever home truley theirs aesthetically, spacially, energetically and functionally.

"The house is in Ripon, Calif., which is an idyllic location, and although it had the guts of a great family home, it needed a lot of work. We pretty much took it down to the studs, and there was not one surface that wasn't touched. With their inspiration photos, I was able to clearly understand their aesthetic."

Last Look – RN Retreat

Wendy Glaister is the founder of Wendy Glaister Interiors, based in Modesto, CA. “We come alongside you, offering the organization, expertise, technical knowledge and designer’s aesthetic that will make pulling your project together fun, not frustrating,” she says of her business’s focus.

We coined this project “RN Retreat.” The remodel was designed in August 2020 in the midst of Covid. The client, an ICU charge nurse at a local hospital, wanted a serene place to be with her husband and a timeless design that was visually calming — an escape after a hectic day.

This summer, at Las Vegas Market, she is poised to win two ASID ANDYZ Awards for Best Residential Space and Best Showroom Space.

This week, DNN Editor in Chief Courtney Porter, sat down with award -winning designer and former ASID Central California Nevada’s President, Wendy Glaister, to discuss running a successful design firm, being an active participant in ones’ local design community, expensive design mistakes, and the emotional toll caring for clients can take. Award-winning Turlock Dental Care remodel featuring Silestone

Turlock Dental Care is a small family business with a big mission: to take care of and help people, whether it be their staff, patients, community members, or people in need by way of their mission trips and support. They moved into a new building on the corner of Monte Vista and Colorado in Turlock, California and remodeled it in order to service even more people.

The prestigious American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) named this project the 2022 Best Commercial Space, and it is no surprise why. The family wanted to create a feeling of calmness within the space, and Wendy Glaister of Wendy Glaister Interiors was the perfect person for the job. She carefully selected every material with this goal in mind, including Silestone countertops complemented by the interesting lighting design by Carrie Arnold.

Bathroom of the Week: Accessibility and Blue Style for Retirees

An updated bathroom with improved storage and a breezier floor plan gives a couple a stylish way to age in place

This Manteca, California, couple built their ranch-style house 35 years ago. After retiring, they had no desire to leave. But a few updates were in order to make the home comfortable for years to come.

For the primary bathroom off the main bedroom, the couple needed more light, improved storage and a more safely accessible shower. They hired designers Wendy Glaister and Stephanie Poulsen and builder Dean Adkins to reimagine the layout and relocate a closet to enlarge the bathroom by 37 square feet. The remodeling team then punched out three new windows and enlarged another to bring in natural light. A new curbless shower with a frameless glass panel gives the couple the easy access they wanted. And a blue vanity and blue accent wall tile in the shower create a soothing style.

Windows for the Win!

NKBA Welcomes Back IDS National’s VIP Designer Experience to KBIS 2023

If there’s one thing I’ve never been accused of, it’s making a home darker. To be honest, if budget allows, I put more or larger windows in every project I take on. Scientists agree, seeing outside makes people happier, more productive and can even lower blood pressure. Of course I want these benefits for my clients, so I work to incorporate streaming sunlight wherever possible.Lately, I have been collaborating with Josh Mason, owner of Custom Shower and Glass, in Modesto.
Sometimes, a space really doesn’t have a lot of room for a big new window, but the room is so dark that I just can’t leave the space without any natural light. Such was the case with the project pictured. Enter the workaround solution: a window between the vertical studs of the exterior wall. In this project, I used the window between the studs almost like a light fixture. A once dark and dreary closet, this space is transformed with a lovely pool of sunshine over the vanity. Josh endorses the idea, mentioning, “The effect of using that 14 ½ space (between framing that is typically 16 on center) is pretty efficient and cost effective as you are not disturbing framing, headers, etc.”

In a whole home remodel we recently completed, the couple wanted an opened up, bright and cheery space. I did not want to disturb the framing header location, so we instead opted to bring the windows down to the level of the countertop. The eye travels right out to the garden beyond, increasing the visual lightness-of-being in the room. “This is a technical installation that really needs to be coordinated with your cabinet subcontractor and slab fabricator. It is not for a DIY home improvement project,” cautions Josh.

This client’s kitchen looks out onto their exquisite backyard, but their kitchen had a sad, tiny window. We chose to place the range center of an enlarged window, brought down to the level of the countertop. The hood was placed above, vented through the ceiling. Josh shares, “Tempered glass actually acts as a great backsplash. It’s even more easy to clean than glazed tile…just a little Dawn dish soap on a clean washcloth and presto!” A sparkling, spot and streak free window can be yours.

For an optimal indoor outdoor feeling, consider floor to ceiling windows. In this project, Josh engineered and removed all exterior vertical supports and re-framed to tie into trusses above, providing the necessary support. Glass meets glass with mitered edges using a starfire glass (with lower iron content) for a seamless view of the garden.

So many rooms, so many solutions for bringing in the sun and all its benefits! It’s windows for the win!
