Dream Home – Boudoir Elegance

Atwater sweet potato and almond farmers Cindy and David Souza built their dream home 25 years ago, but decided that after more than a couple of decades it was time for a makeover. That’s when Wendy Glaister Interiors stepped in with the help of Joe Smith of API Architects and Rui Esteves of REI Construction. One of the most glamorous areas of the house that was renovated is the master bathroom and closet space.

Visit a Modern Country Home

Using a designer found on Houzz, a California couple adds square footage and creates welcoming, hardworking spaces.

Cindy Souza didn’t feel like her home reflected herself anymore. She and her husband, David, built the house on 20 acres in Atwater, California, in the 1990s. The architecture leaned somewhat contemporary, but over the years the couple, who farm 500 acres of almonds and 700 acres of sweet potatoes, tried to make the home a little more country. That resulted in layers of outdated colors and an overall heavy style that Cindy grew tired of. “It wasn’t me anymore,” she says. “I didn’t want to bring friends over. It wasn’t comfortable.”

Downsizing Without Downgrading

How an empty nest couple created a full life in a home where every last detail was designed and built with their lifestyle in mind.

What do you imagine when you think about your dream home? What is the kitchen like? The bathroom? More apropos for today, the home office and outdoor space?

Dennis and Ruby Oliveira thoughtfully considered every detail of their lifestyle when they decided to downsize to a smaller, more turnkey home. At 1,312 square feet, Dennis knew he wanted to maximize every inch of storage and Ruby was happy to have the opportunity to use lighter colors and luxury materials …

IDS May Member Spotlight

When did you realize that you wanted to become an interior designer?
My grandmother encouraged me to be a designer. My son was in first grade and she could see I was having a hard time figuring out what to do with my life. She asked me to call a lady that had been asking me for help with her home. She said she’d love to hear how it went the next day when I came to see her. Smart cookie…she put a timeframe on her expectation. So, I called the lady because I didn’t want to disappoint my grandma, and I have been working ever since.

Who was the first interior designer to make an impression on you?
Mario Buatta. I loved looking at AD when I was little at the cabin we’d visit every summer at Pinecrest Lake. Same 5 issues of AD year after year and the biggest impression was made by Mario Buatta and the BMW 750 iL ads. 😂
